Bicyclists seeking a scenic coastal traffic free ride will find what they are looking for along the Jones Beach Bikeway. The Bikeway is a wide, paved surface that meanders for up to 10 miles through a variety of scenic coastal environments, and offers views of the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean along Long Island’s southern shore. The spectacular views offered and beaches to visit, there are ample spots to stop and take in the beautiful scenery, go for a swim or grab a bite to eat. Bring a beach towel, and your appetite for adventure when you plan for your ride on the Jones Beach Bikeway.
Long Island Bicycle Tours will meet you at the Wantagh train station (9:30 - 10:00am), here you will pick up your bicycle and be on your way to the beach. From the train station it is only a one-mile easy road ride through residential streets to Cedar Creek Park, and the beginning of the bikeway. Cedar Creek Park, offers a spacious 259 acres on which include restrooms, picnic tables, large playground and the beginning of the Jones Beach Bikeway.
Shared with pedestrians, runners and skaters, the bikeway runs along the Wantagh State Parkway from Cedar Creek Park to Jones Beach State Park's East Bathhouse. Here you have a choice either to lock up the bikes and spend some time on the sand or in the ocean, ride the board walk, or continue along the shoreline for about 4 miles to Tobay Beach. Both beaches provide opportunities to purchase food and refreshments.
Depending on which sections you ride, your total trip can range from 12 to 25 miles and can be an "all-day" adventure. This trail is a favorite for bicyclists, although the wind can make riding difficult at times.
